San Felice sul Panaro

San Felice sul Panaro houses an imposing fortress located right on the central square. The Fortress, consisting of four Towers, has always been the symbol of the town.

The Fortress was erected in 1340 by order of Obizzo III d’Este; in 1406 Nicolò III d’Este had it restored by Bartolino Ploti, like the Castle of the Rocche of Finale Emilia.

The building unfortunately suffered significant structural damage following the 2012 earthquake and is still unusable today, although it is possible to admire its structure and majesty.

It looks like an imposing fortress with elegant architecture that mixes medieval and Renaissance elements. Its massive walls, majestic towers and battlements give the castle an imposing and impressive appearance.

Inside, the City Council room, the “Quinto Tosatti” culture room and the city library were housed. In the rooms of the fortress there was a permanent archaeological exhibition.

In addition to its architectural beauty, the Castle of San Felice sul Panaro plays an important role in local history.
