Castelvetro is a charming town famous for its well-preserved historic center.
The hamlet, formerly surrounded by walls, has maintained its form that holds relics of the ancient walled fortifications in the southeast and southwest parts of the hamlet. The village’s narrow streets are lined with old stone houses, many of which date back to the medieval period, creating a picturesque and charming atmosphere. The red roofs of the houses and cobblestone alleys encourage tourists to explore every corner of this charming village.
The historic center is dominated by theTorre delle Prigioni, built in the second half of the 16th century and more than 20 meters high. Initially used as a prison, it was later renovated and used for various purposes until the 1998 renovations that restored the structure to its former glory. Roma Square, also called “Checkers Square” because of its checkerboard paving, is the real beating heart of the town, from which there is an extraordinary view of the plain below. The Clock Tower dominates the square and is, undoubtedly , one of the symbols of Castelvetro. Erected between the 11th and 12th centuries, it represents what remains of the ancient fortified structure on the east side of the castle.
The village is also renowned for the production of Lambrusco wine, and there are several wineries and vineyards in the surrounding area where this renowned wine can be tasted.
The quiet and charm of the village of Castelvetro make it a fascinating destination for anyone wishing to immerse themselves in the history, architecture and culture of the Emilian countryside.
